BALAM’s Diaspora

BALAM Dance Theatre is preparing for its 2012 spring dance season, as company members share their talents with audiences around the globe. Here are some of their activities this fall.

• Artistic Director Carlos Fittante taught a pre-Halloween dance class for the New York Baroque Dance Company that combined Balinese masks and Baroque movement for the Dance of the Month series at the Mark Morris Dance Center. One of our newest company members, Olsi Gjeci, is also performing with the New York Baroque Dance Company.

• Congratulations to Resident Guest Actor Inma Heredia on receiving the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors' (HOLA) Theatre’s Outstanding Solo Performance award for My Audition with Almodóvar!

• Principal ballerina Robin Gilbert is in rehearsals working on a piece with the Felice Lesser Dance Theatre.

• Principal dancer Toshinori Hamada is performing Noh theatre with master Watanabe in Japan throughout November.

• Carlos Fittante is co-creating Spanish Renaissance dances with Barbara Romero of Danzas Española for an upcoming performance at the Lladro Museum & Collectors Society in New York City on December 1.

• A shout out across the miles to our Balinese Artistic Advisor Anom Putra on winning an award in Bali in an all island dance competition for the best Barong, a mythical masked dancing dragon. Anom has previously received several first prize awards for his Baris (warrior's) dance.

• Our new company member Dianna Warren is teaching a Slow-Intermediate ballet class at Peridance Center in New York City.

• Earlier in November, eclectic Carlos Fittante presented a modern dance duet with belly dancer Sira Melikian in “Atelier Orientale” at the Anahid Sofian Studio. He went on to offer a very successful master class in “Le Contredanse” at Hunter College in New York.

• Toshinori Hamada and Carlos Fittante were seen giving interviews in the independent documentary film, “Speaking for Myself”, screened at the County Theatre in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. See the trailer, http://vimeo.com/14809722.

• One of our newest company members, Atsu Yahagi, appeared this month with the Ana Sokolow Dance Theatre.

• Founding Director Islene Pinder is creating an informative video about Balinese dance and culture to accompany Dynastic Beauty, a new lecture/performance of the 2012 Out and About series.
