BALAM Dance Theatre is preparing for its 2012 spring dance season, as company members share their talents with audiences around the globe. Here are some of their activities this fall.

• Artistic Director Carlos Fittante taught a pre-Halloween dance class for the New York Baroque Dance Company that combined Balinese masks and Baroque movement for the Dance of the Month series at the Mark Morris Dance Center. One of our newest company members, Olsi Gjeci, is also performing with the New York Baroque Dance Company.

• Congratulations to Resident Guest Actor Inma Heredia on receiving the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors' (HOLA) Theatre’s Outstanding Solo Performance award for My Audition with Almodóvar!

• Principal ballerina Robin Gilbert is in rehearsals working on a piece with the Felice Lesser Dance Theatre.

• Principal dancer Toshinori Hamada is performing Noh theatre with master Watanabe in Japan throughout November.

• Carlos Fittante is co-creating Spanish Renaissance dances with Barbara Romero of Danzas Española for an upcoming performance at the Lladro Museum & Collectors Society in New York City on December 1.

• A shout out across the miles to our Balinese Artistic Advisor Anom Putra on winning an award in Bali in an all island dance competition for the best Barong, a mythical masked dancing dragon. Anom has previously received several first prize awards for his Baris (warrior's) dance.

• Our new company member Dianna Warren is teaching a Slow-Intermediate ballet class at Peridance Center in New York City.

• Earlier in November, eclectic Carlos Fittante presented a modern dance duet with belly dancer Sira Melikian in “Atelier Orientale” at the Anahid Sofian Studio. He went on to offer a very successful master class in “Le Contredanse” at Hunter College in New York.

• Toshinori Hamada and Carlos Fittante were seen giving interviews in the independent documentary film, “Speaking for Myself”, screened at the County Theatre in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. See the trailer, http://vimeo.com/14809722.

BALAM brings Bali to New York with the Fundamentals of Balinese Dance workshop series. This four class dance workshop will be taught on Saturdays starting November 5 from 3-4 p.m., November 12 from 4-5 p.m., December 3 from 12-1 p.m. and December 10 from 12-1 p.m. at DANY Studio located at 305 West 38th Street.

Nani Devi, a celebrated performer from Bali, who has toured and taught throughout the world, will provide expert instruction that enhances a performer’s physical expression. Students will discover another culture’s skilled movement patterns and experience the feminine archetype from the classic Balinese dance role, Condong. They will learn how to develop three-dimensional hand and arm movements, acquire fierce eyes, present a mysterious, sweet smile, and much more.

Upstate New York High School Students Perform BALAM’s Baroque Inspired Choreographies

BALAM has had a busy season working on several arts in education projects throughout the United States. In the spring, BALAM’s principal ballerina, Robin Gilbert, joined Carlos Fittante to perform a demonstration of his Baroque dance piece, “Folia-A Baroque Pageant”, for the Monticello High School student body in Monticello, New York. The work was so well received Fittante was asked to create Baroque inspired choreographies for the “Steps and Sounds of Different Cultures” program at the high school, culminating in a spectacular student performance in June.

Kenneth Hamrick, artistic director of American Virtuosi and guest harpsichordist at Monticello High School, praised the choreographed pieces’ impact on the audience at the annual performance.

“Last night's performance to a capacity crowd in Monticello's Nesin Theatre was a tremendous success…there was a great standing ovation at the end of the performance. THANK YOU,” said Hamrick.

Arts Week at St Thomas's Day School in New Haven

A special treat of our Arts Week celebration was "Folia", the Spanish Baroque dance performed by Carlos and BALAM's principal ballerina, Robin Gilbert. Everyone was awestruck by the choreography embellished with period costumes, masks and haunting music. The audience responded with a thunderous applause for several minutes – definitely an unforgettable experience.

Students Inspired by Workshops at Washington University in St Louis

Students from the dance and music departments at Washington University in St Louis (Wash U) in Missouri got a rare opportunity to learn and experience first hand Balinese and Baroque music and dance styles. Choreographer Carlos Fittante, a specialist in Balinese and Baroque dances, taught excerpts from the Balinese dance, Legong Kraton, during his guest residency at Wash U in the spring. Under his expert tutelage, the students danced in time to the complex rhythms of this traditional dance. His Balinese mask workshop, an integration of Balinese dance and elements from the acting system, The Method, inspired students in the Intercultural Mask Making class to create their own works masks.

Fittante introduced the Baroque style of music and dance to ballet and vocal students. He performed in costume the classic Baroque choreography, “Chaconne de Phaeton”, and taught a Baroque master-class to the ballet program students. A Baroque gesture workshop presented to selected vocalists of the music department was very well received.

“I really appreciate how much you focused on principles of movement and posture rather than specific gestures. It gave me a different perspective and a lot to work on. It was so refreshing to work with movement and singing, and to work on the Baroque style. I hope we get to work together again sometime soon," said soprano Christine Johnson.

BALAM’s new production, From Bali to the Bronx, brought back memories of the company’s successful Bali Tour 2010. The spring performance at Lehman College’s Lovinger Theatre in Bronx, New York included a short video that featured excerpts from “Harlequin’s Charade”, a humorous, masked ensemble choreography created for Islene Pinder, BALAM’s founding director. Pinder, who had not performed in over a decade, returned to the stage on the tour to celebrate this occasion and perform in the new piece. The video showed the Balinese smiling and laughing in response to “Harlequin’s Charade”, while providing many colorful and exotic images of Bali. (Above photo by Glen Chickering)

In the Question & Answer session that concluded the presentation, a theatre teacher in the audience sparked a discussion about the Commedia dell’Arte Harlequin character in the piece. Harlequin is not a stock character in the Balinese pantheon of traditional masked characters, yet the Balinese audience embraced him wholeheartedly. The Balinese grow up seeing masked dance performances and are attuned to reading body language, movement and dance. Because of their heightened sensitivities and Harlequin’s absolutely funny postures and attitude, these two cultures created perfect cross-cultural understanding!

Belly Dancing Used to Depict Classic Tale

Another highlight of the performance was guest belly dancer, Irina Akulenko, who was spellbinding in her role as Tilotama, the sensuous celestial nymph character taken from a story in the Mahabharata. Akulenko as Tilotama impassioned the masked warrior brothers with undulating hips and vibrating shimmies in Toshinori Hamada’s new dance trio, “Sunda Upasunda”. This mesmerizing work was performed to a magnetic score created in Bali for the tour by the Gamelan Semara Ratih of Ubud that included Indian dance rhythms and hypnotic gong cycles, which gave the work a special trance like power. New Character and Dancer Welcomed to “Ramayana-Abduction of Sita”

BALAM’s popular signature work, “Ramayana-Abduction of Sita”, a Hindu inspired epic, featured the company’s resident guest Balinese dancer, Nani Devi, as the character Dewi Mimpi, angel of the dreams. This character was conceived by Pinder to include Devi’s magnificent traditional Indonesian dance skills in the dance fusion of the ensemble work. The audience luxuriated in Devi’s innate qualities of feminine softness, beauty and charm.

Dewi Mimpi assists Prince Rama battle the greedy demon Rahwana and his accomplice, the cutting Golden Deer, who abducts and imprisons the beautiful Princess Sita. In this concert, Dianna Warren debuted with the company dancing a fusion of ballet and Balinese styles on point to perform the role of the Golden Deer.

New Male Duet Introduced for Two New Dancers

Dancers Olsi Gjeci and Atsushi Yahagi also made their debuts in the program, "From Bali to the Bronx", with two performances of “Primordial Embers”. In this tour de force male duet, two Balinese fire gods lift, throw, fall and body slam each other to a driving orchestral jazz score inspired by gamelan music.

Finding the Fusion

At a recent rehearsal for our upcoming performance at Lehman College’s Lovinger Theatre, BALAM’s Artistic Director Carlos Fittante, Dianna Warren (one of the company’s new dancers) and I found ourselves talking about the challenge of incorporating the Balinese dance style into our Western, ballet trained bodies.

This process is ongoing and requires curiosity, effort and a personal insight. Carlos and I are well trained in the Balinese style, yet we still are figuring out some of the subtleties of Nani Devi’s movements in the company’s Balinese dance class. Luckily, we have acquired both a physical and cultural understanding of Balinese dance, which allows us to integrate and play with it freely in the fusion work.

Dianna, who has no prior Balinese dance training, is learning this style, while simultaneously discovering and defining her role as the Golden Deer in BALAM’s “Ramayana” story ballet. She is also trying not to aggravate past injuries. Not an easy task!

Dancers love movement and we take pride in mastering whatever a choreographer may ask of us. With the sophisticated, subtle movements of Balinese dance, I learned a long time ago, rather than try to grasp everything all at once, be patient and honor the process. Each time, I try to focus on doing even just one movement with more awareness and understanding. This feels less overwhelming and allows the dancer to experience the movement on a deeper, more satisfying level. The challenge in BALAM’s fusion aesthetic is always there, but so is the opportunity to discover one’s personal moment of movement magic!

The rehearsals for this season have begun, and we have three wonderful new dancers, Dianna Warren, Atsushi Yahagi, and Olsi Gjeci joining us. Because of the uniqueness of BALAM’s fusion, combining Balinese dance, music and theatre with Western movement, a lot must be learned and absorbed, both physically and mentally.

This can be thrilling and a little overwhelming at times. It’s crucial for all of us to learn the Balinese movement, which is quite different from what most of the Western dancers have done. The use of the eyes, head, arms, bending of the knees and the quivering of the fingers are all part of what makes Balinese dance so captivating.

The company is very fortunate right now to have our Resident Guest Artist, Nani Devi, teaching us Balinese dance lessons. We literally have the beauty of Bali right in front of us sharing her expertise!

Although I have danced with BALAM for years, I am very enamored with this dance style. It is really fun to see the new dancers discovering it. So stay tuned, as I will keep you updated and posted with photos and videos from our lessons and rehearsals, all leading up to our April 28 performance!

Islene Pinder Talks About Performing in Bali at 81

Returning to the stage after a ten-year hiatus can be a challenge for any dancer, but imagine being a senior citizen and dancing in a foreign country. BALAM Dance Theatre’s Founding Director Islene Pinder spoke candidly with Artistic Director Carlos Fittante about returning to the stage at 81 in Bali.

CF: What motivated you to return to the stage in Bali?

IP: I felt everyone in the company was so supportive of the idea that any worries I had about not being quick or perfectly efficient in rehearsal would not matter. I knew everyone genuinely loved the idea, so this supportive spirit really gave me the chutzpa to go ahead with my desire to perform again.

I was particularly fond of the idea of returning to the stage in Bali because of my many years and experience of learning, performing and teaching Balinese dance. It is my primary movement language and skill set. I also felt dancing in Bali was a fitting affirmation of the deep and loving relationship between myself and my adopted Balinese godson, A A Gede Anom Putra, and his beautiful family. It was the Balinese dance that first attracted me to Bali, but it was the connection to my Balinese family that kept me coming back with such passion.

CF: Did you have to do any special training or preparation?

IP: No. I did not do any special physical training, but I had to cultivate the right attitude. At first, I was intimidated by the idea; after all, it has been ten years since I last performed and I am accustomed to handling the executive, administrative side of running the company, which is a very different mindset.

I had to let myself focus on thinking of myself as a dancer, and did not worry about all the details for the creation of the new ballet for me. As BALAM’s artistic director, you handled all of those details, so I could just focus on my character and movement.

I am a dancer who likes repetition. I would say that was my “special training” to prepare myself. The company and I rehearsed frequently. In Bali, we would run through the dance right after breakfast on the terrace. As any dancer knows, repetition helps galvanize the new neuromuscular pathways needed for the movements to feel like second nature. I also used the run throughs to shape my character’s agem or body posture and to find the best angles and expressions for moving with the mask. Actually, a lot goes into performing any dance, especially if you want to be conscious of your work and do the best you can.

I had the comfort of knowing the choreography would be based on my movement preferences and strengths, and I knew the Balinese gamelan musicians would take pleasure in having me dance with them again. There was a lot of camaraderie, laughter and fun in the process.

CF: What was most surprising for you about performing again?

IP: The rehearsal aspect surprised me because I discovered I felt energized after our practices, even if I entered the studio tired and worried.

CF: Many people would think having this experience at 81 is special. Is there anything unique that your age has given you for performing on this tour?

IP: I was surprised that I wanted more, and that I could do more extensive dancing. The gamelan music still stuns and thrills me after all these years. I also think the Balinese gamelan musicians lovingly and playfully encouraged me because of my age, which, in fact, freed me. This comes from the Balinese cultural reverence for elders and family. We know and have worked with each other for years. Of course, my company members are always loving and joyful when I am able to be with them. The sense of family that permeated the process, the awareness, and the understood meaning of different generations creating together was a big part of this project. It was a joy and I felt blessed.

CF: Will you perform in New York, as well? Yes, because it is a continuation of a specific and special type of interaction with my company and I find the audiences in the Bronx, where BALAM performs every year at Lehman College, have a similar appreciation for family, as the Balinese do.

IP: This tour is more than just a business trip for you, since you are the godmother to your Balinese family. Can you talk a little about this for our readers?

No matter what work I have to do here in Bali, whether it is my movement research, commissioning new gamelan music or masks, or touring with my company, I have a deep and loving bond with Anom and his beautiful family. We take pleasure in being with each other and understand that our hearts are one. The fact that we can share in an artistic capacity, too, is just another wonderful expression of our love for each other.

CF: Now that the tour has finished, what is on the horizon for BALAM Dance Theatre?

IP: We have some performances coming up in the fall and we will continue to expand our artistic scope. I am excited by your work with actors and there has already been talk about a return to Bali in 2012 with more collaboration, maybe creating a dance for Anom Putra, yourself and Toshi Hamada. It is very exciting to think about.

CF: Any closing thoughts?

IP: I’m sad to leave and the time raced by, but I am moved that I had the opportunity to realize that at 81 I am not as distant from movement and my love of dance, which remains as strong a driving force in my body and life, as when I was a little girl.

BALAM's Ballerina Discusses Joys, Travails of Dancing on Point in Bali

BALAM Artistic Director Carlos Fittante sat down with Robin Gilbert, BALAM’s ballerina and lead female dancer, to discuss the joys and travails of dancing ballet fusion on point in Bali.

CF: In the role of Tigerlily, you dance on point. Can you tell our readers something about how this experience is different for you here in Bali, as compared to New York?

RG: Ballet and point dancing have a very specific training practice and environmental conditions, including being able to take ballet class and rehearse on a good floor on a regular basis. There is not an opportunity for any of that here in Bali. In this tour, we have had to rehearse on an outdoor cement courtyard, often wet with rain, mud and moss, while wearing our walking shoes. The temple stages we perform on are also cement with a thin carpet pieced together without being secured by tape, and sometimes the temple stage floors are bare marble tiles covered with grit. I have my point shoes rubberized as a precaution.

We don’t have a chance to step foot onto the stage until we are actually performing, which can be very disorienting. That’s because the way things unfold in Bali. Everything suddenly happens all at once on the temple grounds, which are a bevy of activity, so the performing space is always in use one way or another. Also the open-air temples are without walls, so the downpours of rain can soak you.

CF: How do you deal with all of these challenges?

RG: I have had to let go of my image and definition of what ballet is and just let myself dance. I have to trust in my body’s knowledge, as it moves through the choreography and I am in the moment. I have to make split second decisions to respond to moments that feel dangerous, even for this rock-n-roll ballerina. (Robin is a drummer in the rock band, the Generators.)

CF: What have you gained from this experience?

RG: I know the Balinese care most about the dancer’s spirit. They respond to the joy and passion that is dance. Of course, they love beauty and skill, too and are very discerning. Even if the dance style is not their own, they want to feel the spirit of the dancer in the moment. That focus has been very empowering for me and this actually helps me transcend the physical challenges and danger.

CF: How do you like dancing to live gamelan music performed by the renowned Semara Ratih?

RG: Working with those 25 musicians is amazing! In rehearsal, we face each other, so they can watch us as they play to get all our movements coordinated with the rhythms of the music. There is a palpable kinesthetic bond between the dancers and musicians. I feel they are dancing with us. It is wonderful. In the performance, they are seated all around on stage and as I dance, I know when they are pleased. They just smile.

CF: If there was something you would change about the tour so far, what would it be?

RG: I’ve been sick with “Bali Belly”. I would rather not have to go through that. It makes my body weak. Even though there are so many conditions that make point dancing so difficult, I wouldn’t change any of it because that is Bali and my heart is open to the true spirit of Bali.

Dear BALAM Firends:

Working with my Balinese family and BALAM's collaboration with the famous Semara Ratih Gamelan is the most remarkable experience of my life. Bali Tour 2010 has been a success! Our performances have been very well received by audiences.

We are in all the local Balinese newspapers and individual retreats have invited us to perform solos and duets. This is such an honor for us.

I am returning to the stage after a ten-year hiatus and dancing in Harlequin's Charade based on the humor and absurdity of the Balinese Topeng (masked) dance. So far, we have seven performances lined up.

During my rehearsal with the gamelan company, Anom Putra (my godson and the director of Semara Ratih) said I had charisma. From Anom, this is the best compliment one can get and shows this old lady isn't so old.

“Sunda Upasunda-NYC Brothers” Revealed

One-on-One with Toshinori Hamada

Carlos Fittante sat down with Toshinori Hamada during Bali Tour 2010 to discuss his new piece “Sunda Upasunda-NYC Brothers” and its world premiere that just took place in the village of Kutuh, Bali on August 3. The story ballet, inspired from a Hindu myth that is often seen in Balinese dance performances, features an original score by the Semara Ratih Gamelan. Dancers Hamada and Carlos Fittante wear Baroque masks and Ratih Rismapurti performs the role of a Balinese dance maiden.

This is Hamada’s third collaboration with the Semara Ratih Gamelan. In 2005, he choreographed and performed a solo, Bali-Bolero and in 2007, he co-created the duet, KT Gamelan.

What did the process involve to present this new piece in Bali?

The process of collaborating in Bali was all about communication, scheduling and adjusting to jam karet or Bali time. The Semara Ratih is an amazing gamelan orchestra and I knew that what they created would be inspiring to me. The gamelan gave added breath, blood and vibration to the dance.

Before I arrived in Bali, I had an image in my mind of my piece. This image was shattered, when the reality hit of fitting it together with gamelan music in the short, speedy rehearsal process we had of about three days. This is a story ballet, and it was important for me, as the choreographer, to make sure the audience could understand the story and the message of the tale. For BALAM’s interpretation, I focused on the dangers of arrogance.

I also wanted the choreography to have a sculptural sense and for each moment to be a beautiful picture of epic beauty. Recently, I was at the Louvre Museum in Paris and was inspired by the myriad of classic statuary displayed there. My decision to use Baroque masks grew from those images of the statues that were dancing in my imagination.

I was amazed at the ability of the Semara Ratih Gamelan to create and play music that suited the traditional Japanese movements of my solo and Carlos Fittante’s Spanish dance inspired solo within the piece. I am thankful for this great challenge and experience and am happy at the good “campur” or mix.

What Do Bullfighting and Balinese Dance Have in Common? by Carlos Fittante

Recently, I took bullfighting lessons through my affiliation with Barbara Romero’s Danzas Españolas in New York City to strengthen my Spanish dance training and to incorporate some of this technique into my upcoming performances in BALAM’s Bali Tour 2010.

Audiences in Bali will see me integrate the bullfighter’s stance and walk, which is very distinctive, as well as use some of the bullfighter’s cape technique in Toshinori Hamada’s new duet, “Sunda Upasunda-NYC Brothers”, that will premiere August 3 in the Pura Desa of Kutuh on Ubud, Bali.

Studying under the tutelage of former professional bullfighter Elias Guzman, or “maestro” as I addressed him in our training sessions, I experienced an intense regimen of powerful and transformative exercises. These exercises not only required strength and agility, but also struck me as physical secrets with a power on “keeping the fear out” and developing agility, grace and assuredness to master the charging bull.

There was something monastic and Eastern in the maestro’s impassioned explanations of the bull’s psychology, the reasons behind the attire and even the hairstyle of the torero. All of this is not unlike the Baris or Balinese warrior dancer, who, for example, understands the significance of the fit of his sparkling headpiece, or the use of breath control during the dance, which is utilized in both movement techniques.

Maestro constantly impressed upon me the bullfighter’s need for aesthetics in all of the movements and poses made. This ability to link the harshness of reality to a nobler expression is also a concept found in Baris, the warrior, who uses an abstracted gestural language to intoxicate the viewer, even though he is capturing the ferocity and bravery of the psychology of battle. The Balinese dancer and the bullfighter are completely self-aware, as they delve into the unknown.

I look forward to sharing a touch of the ancient and deep tradition of the bullfighter’s spirit with the Balinese, whose lives are embedded in ritual and tradition. Their kinesthetic sensitivity and spiritual alertness will connect them to the beautiful movements of the torero and the Spanish dance techniques I will utilize in BALAM’s work. Olé!

BALAM returns to Bali this summer to perform one of its favorite signature works, “Ramayana-Abduction of Sita”, originally inspired by the Balinese dance drama I witnessed in my first visit to Bali in 1990. BALAM has created an action packed story fusing Balinese, ballet, modern, karate, and belly dance movement to bring four archetypal characters to life. This work has been praised by audiences and received critical acclaim in Bali and the United States.

In preparation for Bali Tour 2010, I am reconstructing the work with a heightened attention during rehearsals to weaving the heroic drama of the characters, who are gods, with real and nuances of human expressions. To accomplish this, I draw upon some of my recent studies and artistic experiences.

This year, I have been working with BALAM’s resident guest actor, Inma Heredia, as a movement consultant and choreographer for several of her physical theatre projects. This partnership coincided with my return to acting lessons at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, where I teach movement and also learn the Method. I have also recently taken a Kestenberg Movement Profile workshop introducing this rich system of movement analysis that trains the observer to perceive and understand the psychological meaning of movement.

These experiences have enhanced my ability to make simple, yet significant changes in the “Ramayana-Abduction of Sita” choreography. Throughout the ballet, the audience will see rich, dynamic choreography that is clearly motivated by the character’s dramatic intention, as well as experience powerful emotional transitions that are rooted in truthfulness. This skilled work from the dancer/artist demands a rich inner life and an ability to transmit this reality outward. This imbues the characters of the ballet with real human vulnerabilities.

This year’s version of BALAM’s “Ramayana” ballet is sure to move our audiences in Bali once again. The best elements of both worlds are joined, the superhuman drama of the gods and the real emotions of mortals. What better way to capture the audience and lead them through a deep journey!

Balinese mythology provides ample material for new work. Sunda Upasunda-NYC Brothers", a new duet choreographed by Toshinori Hamada (Toshi) for BALAM Dance Theatre’s Bali Tour 2010, is inspired by the popular Hindu myth, "Sunda Upasunda" enacted in dance throughout Bali.

The upcoming tour provides Toshi and I the opportunity to fulfill a long-held dream of creating a duet for the two of us. In our hearts, we consider ourselves “dance brothers” and appreciate each other’s talents.

We have movement skills that are similar. For example, Toshi is not only a Kabuki and Noh theatre actor, but he also holds a black belt in karate and has studied Iaido (a Japanese sword technique) and modern dance. I am a Baroque dancer, with a strong ballet background, who has studied classical fencing, mixed martial arts, and Spanish folk dance. We both have a background in Balinese dance and mask work. All these specialized skills are featured in Toshi’s new duet and I expect the Balinese will be thrilled to see their myth so distinctively enacted. Imagine an Akira Kurasawa film delving into on a Balinese theme.

Two brothers gain tremendous powers from the gods due to their austere regimens. They become so potent that they conquer the world and even intimidate the gods. Braham, the supreme Hindu deity, cannot renege on the boons the brothers have received from him and to stop their rampage, he sends a beautiful celestial nymph to disrupt them. Each brother falls passionately in love with the nymph and when blinded by desire and jealousy, they fight each other until they kill one another.

"Sleeping Buddha" Rehearsals Begin--A Bali Tour 2010 Piece

“Sleeping Buddha”, a new piece that will premiere in BALAM’s Bali Tour 2010, is conceived and choreographed by Shelley Lynne Cummins. This work is inspired by the life of Buddha and the four archetypal art depictions of his life: sitting, standing, moving and reclining.

Here Shelley and Robin Gilbert in the rehearsal studio try on their fabulous neon colored wigs and shimmering fabric that will become their fitted jewel toned sarongs/robes.

They represent *chakras related to the Buddha’s postures and in the choreography move interdependently to symbolize the Buddha’s exploration of the diversity of consciousness into Nirvana.

*According to the yogic tradition, chakras are etheric energy centers in the human body associated with various states of consciousness.

Islene Pinder Announces Bali Tour 2010

Bali. Here we come! Founding Director Islene Pinder announces that BALAM Dance Theatre will undertake a full company tour in Bali this summer from July 26-September 2. Artistic Director Carlos Fittante and the company’s dancers/artists--Toshinori Hamada, Shelley Lynne Cummins, and Robin Gilbert--will once again collaborate and perform with the renowned Semara Ratih Gamelan of Ubud under the directorship of Anom Putra.

So far, at least four performances in four different villages have been lined up and coincide with Bali’s festivities honoring Indonesian Independence Day, officially observed on August 17. Large audiences of Balinese residents and tourists will be moved by BALAM’s cutting-edge, Balinese inspired repertoire.

I am excited to return to Cleveland, Ohio once again to work with the brilliant period music orchestra, Apollo’s Fire, directed by Jeanette Sorrell. Around this time last year, I created and performed the imaginative dances of Henry Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas” for Apollo’s Fire.

With another commission this year, I created Baroque choreography specifically for the ballet music from Mozart’s “Idomeneo” opera for the Apollo’s Fire Mozart Festival. When this work premiered in 1781, this was Mozart’s first opera seria, a genre characterized by heroic emotion and dramatic purpose. The music is grand and passionate!

Inspiration for my new choreography emanates from two leading characters in the opera, Ilia and Idamante, to present what I see as an archetypal relationship -- a damsel and her knight. Ilia must be rescued, and Idamante needs to prove bravely his chivalry. In the spirit of the Age of Enlightenment, I transform the damsel/knight relationship. The knight dies, the damsel learns to rescue herself, and the two souls become one being.

This new choreography will be unveiled in two performances featuring myself with BALAM’s ballerina and my dance partner, Robin Gilbert. Our first performance, March 13, 8:00 p.m., at the renowned Severance Hall, home to the Cleveland Orchestra and one of the premiere music halls in the Midwest, promises to sell out. Oberlin College’s beautiful Finney Chapel provides the stage for this heroic love story the following day at 4:00 p.m.

Do Challenges Help Create Magic Onstage?

On a showery Sunday afternoon on May 3rd, BALAM offered a new rendition of its story ballet, "Ramayana Abduction of Sita" in the 30th annual Asian/Pacific American Heritage Festival at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza in New York.With the rain gods in full force that day and the temperature hovering around 50 degrees, it was unpleasantly wet and cold.

The Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, named after the Nobel Peace Laureate, sits adjacent to the United Nations framing it like a modern-day temple. We the dancers and Islene Pinder, BALAM’s founding director, were all truly inspired by the venue, while the weather conditions conjured fond memories from past tours of monsoon downpours in the outdoor temples in Bali.

Imagine all the performing artists--(traditional Indian and Bollywood dancers, Japanese Kodo drummers, Chinese acrobats, rockers, singers and musicians and us)--dressing in a 10 x 10 foot tent. There was no place to put our things or to move around.

For hours we stood corralled in the tent that had inch deep puddles on the ground in our tightly bound Balinese costumes and headpieces. We were cold, wet, and unable to get comfortable. Also inside the tent was Ray, a beautiful 10-month-old baby boy, who along with his drummer mom stared at us curiously. Thank goodness for this "Ray" of sunshine in the tent! He made us smile and laugh, which help ground us before we performed.

In Bali the arts are believed to be offerings to the gods, who communicate through the performance. The Balinese also believe the gods will play tricks on you to test your composure and devotion. Without discussing it, we all seemed to recognize these challenging conditions: the cold, wet weather, the crowded uncomfortable dressing area, as BALAM’s test from the Balinese gods.

The performance that flowed through us was a powerful expression coming from our hearts and souls. We were five performers, who became one, and the connection was palpable. We also knew the audience, soggy underneath their umbrellas, felt it too. The challenging circumstances that surrounded us didn’t seem to matter in the least!

These questions stayed with us after our performance.
• Did we, as a team, become more sensitive to each other because of the challenging conditions?
• Would we have transcended ourselves the way we did, if we started to complain about the difficult conditions?
• Was the grace and ease we felt on stage due to our collective good humor and good will?

Whatever the answers may be, we all felt truly grateful for the special performance we were able to create and for that beautiful rainy day!

La-Tina Gets a Makeover

New works often require revisions to integrate fully the material. The evolution of La-Tina, a humorous masked solo that confronts the stereotype of the sexy Latin female, exemplifies BALAM’s organic choreographic process.

Originally. I created the piece in 2007 for the company’s principal dancer and ballerina, Robin Gilbert. This first interpretation of La-Tina presented a masked woman performing a cha-cha-cha on point that debuted in the Staten Island Second Annual International Dance Festival.

A year later, this piece underwent significant changes, when Robin danced the solo in high-heeled shoes, rather than point shoes. The high-heel shoe version allowed the character to move in a more cha-cha-cha/ballroom manner, and let Robin concentrate on the presentation of the Balinese mask.

In September 2008, I decided to explore the theme of gender inherent in the solo by stepping into the role in the DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL. Before I could present this new version, several changes were made. The piece’s first costume, a lace bell-bottom pants and halter-top outfit created by Edward Sylvia, did not fit me. I consulted Sylvia, an experienced designer of drag costumes, about how to transform myself into the character of La-Tina.

Using the same comedic Balinese mask, three inch red heels and Sylvia’s new, fabulous costume--an asymmetrical skirt and a padded halter-top decorated with ruffles--La-Tina in drag was born!

To help define this new character’s mannerisms, I consulted with theatre director Laura Drake. She encouraged me to perform the solo without the padded halter-top, as she experienced the juxtaposition of a man in drag and bare-chested as being more transgressive.

In November 2008, I performed the solo, complete with the padded halter- top in Coney Island Cabaret presented at the Puffin Room in SoHo, New York. The piece was an audience favorite!

The verdict is still out: Should the drag version of the solo be performed with the padded halter-top or bare-chested?
